Deadline: June 14, 2026
Eligibility
Submissions are open to all writers, international and Canadian.

This also includes incoming students that have accepted a place in UBC’s creative writing program. In order to enter, UBC alumni cannot have taken a UBC creative writing program course during the previous two years.
Submission Guidelines
We accept simultaneous submissions, and we ask that you let us know if your piece is accepted elsewhere, OR withdraw it from our Submittable.
- Prose
- We accept fiction, creative non-fiction, comics, hybrid works, and literary essays. We do not publish rhetorical, academic, or strictly journalistic non-fiction.
- Our preferred length for submissions is 4,000 words or less.
- Submit only one piece at a time, unless you are submitting flash fiction or non-fiction (under 1,000 words), in which case you may submit up to three pieces in a single document. Please wait to hear back before submitting again.
- Poetry
- Submit up to four poems, to a maximum of six pages. Do NOT submit six one-page poems.
- We welcome cross-genre and interdisciplinary poetry and poetics.
- Translations
- We only accept translations that have been undertaken with the permission of the original author or rights holder, and we will ask to see confirmation of this permission before we publish.
- Poetry Translations
- We pay $45 CAD/printed page plus two mailed contributor copies, and $30 CAD/printed page to the original author plus two mailed contributor copies. PRISM may choose to publish original poems alongside translations, and this will be up to the editor to decide on a case-by-case basis.
- Prose Translations
- We pay $40 CAD/printed page for prose translations plus two mailed contributor copies, and $25 CAD/printed page to the original author up to $200 CAD, plus two mailed contributor copies.
Payment
We purchase first North American serial rights and pay $40 CAD per printed page for prose and $45 CAD per printed page for poetry. Contributors also receive two copies of the issue in which their work appears.
Reading Fee
$3
Writers for whom the $3.00 CAD fee is prohibitive are welcome to submit using the Inclusive Access option on Submittable.
Response Time
Reply times range between six to twelve months, and we may not be able to respond to emails regarding the status of a submission

The Malahat Review
Deadline: June 30, 2026
Eligibility
Submissions are open to Canadian writers only
Submission Guidelines
Excluding any of our contests and theme issues, we ask that writers submit only once per genre (poetry, fiction, cnf, translations) in each calendar year.
We don’t publish any work that has previously been published, whether in print or online, even if the print run or online audience was small. No work that has been excerpted elsewhere is eligible for submission, nor is any work that has been revised since its original publication.
Please inform us if you’re making a simultaneous submission, and please update us as soon as possible with any changes to the status of your submission.
- Poetry
- Three to five poems (single spaced, up to 10 pages max).
- Fiction
- A single submission (double spaced) of up to 8,000 words OR one to three shorter fictions of up to 750 words each.
- Creative Nonfiction
- A single submission (double spaced) of up to 5,000 words OR one or two pieces of up to 1,000 words each. Creative nonfiction is literary writing based in fact; style matters no less than substance, whatever form the writing may take (e.g., the personal essay, memoir, biography, travel writing, historical account). We do not accept submissions whose primary purpose is to argue a case, review a literary or artistic work, or to offer an opinion or commentary on someone or something.
- Translations
- Although The Malahat Review publishes work by contemporary writers, we will consider translations of work by past writers who are unknown or little known in the English-speaking world and might therefore still be of contemporary interest. For all translations, please include a copy of the original text and, for work still under copyright, a copy of a letter of permission from the copyright holder (whether the original author and/or first-language publisher). The same limits and rules apply to translation submissions as to other submissions.
- Reviews
- We don’t accept unsolicited reviews. If you’re interested in being added to our list of potential reviewers, please email malahatbooks[at]uvic.ca with a sample of previous reviews and a note about which genres/authors/subjects interest you. Due to the limits of space, we normally review work only by Canadian writers and Canadian publishing houses.
Payment
We pay CAD$70 per published page plus a one-year print subscription and two copies of the issue in which your work appears.
Reading Fee
Free
Response Time
We try our best to get back to writers as soon as possible. Due to the many submissions we receive, please allow for one to six months for poetry and up to nine months for fiction and creative nonfiction.
